Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common condition which linked to certain foods, lifestyle habits and stress levels or mood but showing no abnormalities in the digestive system after investigated by blood tests endoscopy and imaging tests. IBS affects around 3 out of every 10 people. Females are more likely than males to be affected. IBS is a different disease from inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis).
Some key symptoms of IBS include:
abdominal pain or discomfort
stomach bloating and wind
chronic diarrhoea or constipation, or alternating between the two
You may feel your bowel movement was incomplete (even after a poo) and nausea. Often your pain can be relieved by passing wind or faeces.
Some common IBS triggers include diet, stress, infection and medicines. While the exact cause of IBS is not clear in the context of modern medicine , Chinese Medicine provides a true alternative explanation to and effective treatment for this illness.
In Chinese medicine, gallbladder is responsible for the intestinal motility (peristalsis). If the gallbladder has problem, there will be IBS symptoms like abdominal pain and bloating, reflux, constipation and/or diarrhoea. Constipation is caused by reduced gallbladder function and diarrhoea is due to commodity of weakened absorption of intestine.
Treatment is straightforward then after understand the mechanism. If you has reflux and constipation, Da Chai Hu Tang is the choice; if you suffers IBS with diarrhoea, Xiao Yao San is the choice.
